In 1971 under the guiding hand of Mr Jim watt, a Tug of War team was formed in the Garvagh area. Pullers were drawn from around the local neighbourhood and the training commenced under Jim as the coach. In the first year the team took the coveted 640kgs Northern Ireland Championship title and then went on to represent Northern Ireland at the European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.
At this event the young team took silver place, following on from the success the previous year by the other well known team from Aghadowey who had won the Gold medal at the same weight.

Following on from this event the team also travelled to South Africa representing Northern Ireland.

That success was built upon and in 1973 the present coach Mr Peter Doherty took over the team taking them to even higher levels. The team has represented Northern Ireland on many occasions at UK, European and World levels always acquitting themselves well against all opposition.
